Trump Says It’s ‘Fine’ If September China Talks Are Canceled

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said talks with China planned for next month could be called off after the trade war between the world’s biggest economies abruptly escalated in recent days.

“We’ll see whether or not we keep our meeting in September,” Trump said as he left the White House Friday for a fundraiser in the Hamptons. “If we do, that’s fine. If we don’t, that’s fine.”

Trump last week said new tariffs on Chinese imports will take effect Sept. 1, shattering a truce reached with President Xi Jinping weeks earlier and unleashing tit-for-tat actions on trade and currency policy that risk accelerating a wider geopolitical fight between the two countries.

Trade negotiators are currently scheduled to meet again in Washington in September. Recent escalations have raised the possibility that negotiations could break down once again.

But Trump said the two countries still have “an open dialogue.”

“We’re doing very well with China,” Trump said Friday. “We’re talking to China. We’re not ready to make a deal but we’ll see what happens.”

If Trump and other western countries were smarter with the remaining years in their elected positions to do SOME GOOD for America and their countries they would reorganize the public spending by assigning immigrants to jobs desperately needing filled, educate the immigrants to fill those jobs, make the immigrants sign papers to pay them the same wages as paid in China, organize barracks-like accommodations, like those used to house Chinese laborers in China, and in short imitate the Chinese system while protecting each immigrants' FREEDOM to live and enjoy life.
I have been telling you guys ... this time around, we might not see those MAGA hats anymore, cause China will not make them for him.
Trump, in all his ineptitude, thinks he can stall, then win the election by making a deal in the nick of time. China, on the other hand, will simply outplay him by stalling even further until he has lost, then make a deal with his subjugator.
David, except that the Xi is asking their people to obey and bear the burden to pump up his own wallet and solidify his power. Xi and Wang have already created off shore accounts in his family members names to stack away the wealth the Chinese people has created for them, it’s always been the playbook of the Chinese ruling power for 5000years already, they don’t tell that internally of course, you’ve been brain washed
exactly
that happens not just to China but everywhere, matter of degree. if it goes overboard, something will rebalance back towards the mean.
We need full economic disengagement from China until they have free and open elections. We should have never begun trading with this autocratic dictatorship in the first place.
Lol, tbus can be the joke of this century ... you clearly don't understand how the world works. There is no way any country or company can completely disengage from China. China is fast becoming the biggest economy of the world. Unless your country or business doesn't want to survive, there is no way you can disengage. China is a Sleeping Dragon awaken and ready to soar much much higher.
exactly
Nixon! just another example of how republicans will go all length to make any dollar
China cannot be trusted!!!
Ahhhhhh the sweet smell of free will.
Make all from usa, forget made in china,
That can never happen ... Americans are not skillful enough to produce at high quality at a low wage. So 100% we will never ever have made in the USA again.
Trump says buy America, hire Americans. He wants to produce for the world at US prices. good try
Trump sold his.ppl this made in USA dream..... everyone can make the best that the market can't afford
Take all businesses out of China. communist regime. how can you trust them?
China is not communist. President Xi Jing Ping likes to call it Socialist with chinese characteristics. This system is proven to rival the West. The facts are strong that this system can become the new system of the world, as China rises to become the number one economy of the world. Warren Buffet said, China has found their secret sauce.
wow, may be trump is big shark
A great leader gets peoples together a bad leader separate the world..
Like China's communist dictatorship??  Make it in America!!
He is another mahathir a typical loose cannon.
Dictator Donald, manipulating the markets again, Moscow Mitch, live at five with next weeks investment advisory!
not a dictator; but a president with a backbone we've seen in a very very long time.
Funny how people support Trump on this one.10% tariffs on china goods, who pays, oh yes the American people pay
you find many stores paying your sales tax? Same thing.
I can assure you Trump has no values that do not have a price on them. Ask Putin.
Small price to pay to make the Chinese play by the international trade rules.  And to stop stealing out intellectual property.
would be nice if he would just be quiet about trade. obviously he is making money on the volitility
sic the SEC on him, maybe?
Of course, DT has earned so much from inside trades thru his twitters...so obvious & paid off all his debts avoid bankruptcy
He knows how to stimulate business
Only way he knows how to run a business is into the ground.
Take the China trade deal off the table permanently, rais tariff to 50%
LMAO ... this can be the joke of the century. You have no idea what China will do if this were to happen. China will respond and put US into depression era.
Hope they have the handcuffs waiting as he walks out of the white house in Jan 2021. Lock him up! Lock him up! Lock him up! What a crook!
He, Clinton, Omar, Cortez, and Sharpton can all walk in together.
best thing for US is not have a deal, so nee factories be built in US. It needs to be clear that for at least a decade imports will have a tarrif attached so you can produce in US.
Yes, but that will wipe out the retirement savings of millions of people
We already had a decade like that because of tariffs. It was called the Great Depression...
lol.. dude you really need to read basic theories of trade and specially comparative advantage. for manufacturing, the US does not have comparative advantage as its labor is too high in comparison with the others such as developing countries
tariff man thought he is winning
Great deal maker hasn’t made a single deal since office.
Sure he has! Behind closed doors with Putin ...
DT cannot bully China & only care his election & let us hv suffered more tax & more $$$$ to pay everything. DT, such an old guy, will only 4 more years in WH, if get re-elected. Then, DT wl spend lifetime in Jail & bankcrupcy. The entire world wl excute him for he is King of mess & choas & bankcrupcy :) :) :)
Lol know body sees this ... he is just delaying the deal and will cash it near 2020 elections
or maybe china is stalling to make negotiations with another president instead
another trump failure . . . like everything else he messed up
NAFTA? another deal that is still not complete...losing...the Trump way!
Obama takes unemployment from over 8% to 4.1%. Trump drops it .4% and he is the job hero. I do not understand Republican math or logic.
it’s the math they taught at the fradulent, defunct Trump University...
You told you guys ... China is winning trade war hands down. Trump learns this is no real estate deal he is making here. He needs to fire Pompeo, Lightizer amd Ross. After that, he makes a deal or quit, that is his best options.
No foresight, no positive action, poor leadership = country suffers.
