(Reuters) - Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk got into a spat with Bernie Sanders on Sunday after the U.S. senator demanded the wealthy pay their "fair share" of taxes.

"We must demand that the extremely wealthy pay their fair share. Period," Sanders wrote on Twitter (NYSE:TWTR). Taking a jibe at the 80-year-old senator, Musk responded by saying "I keep forgetting that you're still alive."

The billionaire CEO who had already offloaded a combined $6.9 billion worth of shares in the electric car company as of Nov. 12, further wrote, "Want me to sell more stock, Bernie? Just say the word."

Sanders' tweet comes amid the backdrop of Washington's efforts to hike taxes for the super-wealthy.

U.S. Senate Democrats have unveiled a proposal to tax billionaires' stocks and other tradeable assets to help finance President Joe Biden's social spending agenda and close a loophole that has allowed them to defer capital gains taxes indefinitely.

A week ago, Musk tweeted that he would sell 10% of his shares if users of the social media platform endorsed the move. About 57.9% of people voted for the stock sale.

What a horrible person you are mister Musk. All the wealth in the world and still greedy. You were going to sell your stock anyhow because you Dam well know your company is not worth  the current bubbled stock price. And you had to use this opportunity to make a sad comment on somebody fighting for the less fortunate. You are a horrible human bean. And if you ask me, i think it’s time for a French Revolution in the USA. Remember the less fortunate did not invent capitalism.
Get the **** out of country if you don't like the free market system!!!
Duck hangs out in this platform and wants a handout.
Socialism make all of us poor unless we have lots of natural resources to pay us like scandinavia (timber n oil) Soudi (oil) area. For now It works for them until they run out of natural resources
Musk is 100% correct. Have any of these bern cult members took a tour of America lately. There are thousands of opps to better ones self without the generous plans of fakes like bern. I am well on my way to UHNWI status and grew up less than average. This man has no plans to address the 60million aborts that his compassionate party sees nothing wrong with. The greatest lie that postmodernism has ever told is that the strong can continue to exert their will onto the weak and it not have detrimental effects on the rest of us. Welcome to the deck of the Titanic if we don't do much more to decrease these numbers. Keep up the good work Musk and bury the competition.
Elon Musk is the creator of wealth. The ilk of Bernie Sanders is the destroyers of wealth! They do nothing and contribute nothing to society!
Right up my alley JT. We as a society could be much more if we stopped attacking all forms of wealth including eternal life..the most crucial of all.
let the SEC games begin
He cant sympathize with society because he needs nothing. Just like the rest of the billonaires.
Musk is just cashing out as people has inflated his shsre holdings.Smart guy
Yes Musk, sell your shares and give the money to the government, so they can invest a substantially less amount in "green" companies, more than likely run by their supporters.  What this is really about is letting politicians like Bernie be our central planners, and dictate what is best for us.  Maybe what we need is less government spending and reduced taxes for the middle class.  It would also result in less inflation, thus giving a break to the poor as well.  But then Bernie can't be a little dictator.
That comment, "I keep forgetting you're alive", doesn't flatter Musk. Bernie is clearly a compassionate and caring guy, whether you agree with his politics or not.
Bernie is a failed communist propagandist. He will bring that failure to his grave.
only hotheaded trash can believe it's cool insulting senior people
I think he'll have a peaceful retirement, and enjoy the well wishes of many fans. They love him in Vermont, and it's green and peaceful there. White Christmases too. There are many in congress who deserve your ire more than Bernie, no matter his failings.
