Comic: The Coronavirus Runs Rampant Through a Reopening Indian Economy

Investing.com -- India has emerged as the world’s new hotspot for Covid-19: the virus is running rampant through the country’s densely-populated cities and a hinterland with often under-developed health infrastructure. As of last week, it had over 5.5 million cases, second only to the U.S.

New infections nearly touched 100,000 per day last week, casting a pall over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 70th birthday but – thankfully – not distracting the government from the need to cool down tension on its border with China.

The usual weekend dip in registered infections and deaths may be only a temporary reprieve: the lack of a comprehensive state safety net has forced the government into reopening the economy before it has the virus properly under control, and evidence from Europe and the U.S. suggests that that risks a further surge in cases.

The country’s most famous tourist attraction, the Taj Mahal, reopened on Monday for the first time in six months, but reportedly sold only 300 tickets out of a possible maximum of 5,000.

Soon, India will be on top of the list...
but China is still with February 80k sounds strange ! 1) China has “own” statisrics or 2) China has a vacsine since 2019 ?!
It is funny when such an article is being published in a country's leading investing platform whose own Covid-19 cases are not in control with next presidential elections on looming over their head. US maybe a developed country but India has managed the COVID Crisis way better, people are taking precautions to increase their immunity, those who have COVID are even more determined to get better, so much that India's recovery rate is way up ahead then that of US. I would go so far to say that nearly 70% of Indian people would have developed COVID Symptoms by now and recovered on their own. Our mortality percentage is way down under 2% compared to USA's. We are a huge country. not yet the biggest Economy but we will be. These cases will go down one day, Vaccine will be found. Yes, being 2nd biggest populated country we will face a ton of issues but in our struggles we find strength and move on to make a better future. PM, his men & even the oppositions have done good job during tough times
90% of people wear masks to cover their neck only.. what precautions. yes we don't have population which says not wearing mask is their fundamental rights.. but most are not really serious about it.
I don't think comparing countries to each other is worthwhile, compare where you are in preventing transmission and where you could be.

1.2 Billion and still second ...350 million and first ! Does that explain somthing to you about the place that had "under developed health infrastructure" ?
india first!! -Narendra Modi-
funny how the country's China don't like are the worse hit. food for thought.
Scam - is the national Indian idea.
The only country you can compare India is with China given its huge population. And we really cant say what happened or is happening in china. Hopefully once this virus that was in my opinion spread delibrately by China is under control, China will be made to account for it.
Modi has destroyed indias economy. His haphazard policies and decisions has plugned the nation into an economic downturn. Its a good thing we habe a billion plus people, sp domestic consumtiom is always there.
