WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden said on Thursday that he will make a decision on whether to forgive some federal student loan debt and announce his plans soon.

"I am considering dealing with some debt reduction," Biden told reporters.

"I am not considering $50,000 debt reduction, but I'm in the process of taking a hard look at whether or not there will be additional debt forgiveness, and I'll have an answer on that in the next couple of weeks."

Student debt cancellation has become a priority for many liberals and one that could shore up popularity with younger and more highly educated voters, who lean Democratic, ahead of November's critical midterm elections.

But the Biden administration has been reluctant to unilaterally make an unprecedented cancellation of college debt owned by the U.S. government, a move that would test his legal authority.

Instead, Biden has asked Congress to pass a bill forgiving debt that he could sign.

The federal government has let 43 million borrowers stop paying on a total of $1.6 trillion in student loans since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Bankruptcy Looming ⭕⭕
Sorry liberal rag that is investing.com but Biden has no power to do such thing.  It has to go through Congress and Manchin said go pee up a roap.  They have until November before the entire thing changes over and Biden will be eating his lime green jello alone.
New Democratic mantra: "One Bribe, One Vote."
Triggered much?
same as the gop, reduce wealth taxes for people and corporations, for campaign donations
Sure, it makes perfect Democrat sense to increase the debt load for all tax-paying Americans by paying  for elective, higher education loans for others.  Like most of the Democrats fiscal policies, this continues to be inflationary.
Democrats would love to spend 1/10th the money on relief for individuals that Republicans do on corporate bailouts and handouts. Don’t try to act like you have anything to say about fiscal reaponsibility. 💩
How about the government just refinancing the educational loans at 0% like they would for car companies or airlines! Don't forgive but at least give the kids a chance to payoff.
These are usually loans from predatory schools and they have no chance to pay this back. The law really needs to be amended to allow bankruptcy to apply for student loans.
I do agree tho with no interest on student loans.
