PALM BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - President Donald Trump received an update on trade talks with China on Saturday at his Florida retreat after discussions in Beijing saw progress ahead of a March 1 deadline for reaching a deal.

Trump, at his Mar-a-Lago club, was briefed in person by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and trade expert Peter Navarro, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, economic adviser Larry Kudlow and other aides joined by phone.

The White House offered no additional detail.

Both the United States and China reported progress in five days of negotiations in Beijing this week but the White House said much work remains to be done to force changes in Chinese trade behavior.

Shortly after the meeting with his trade team, Trump said on Twitter the talks in Beijing were "very productive."

At a White House press conference on Friday, he said the talks with China were "very complicated" and that he might extend the March 1 deadline and keep tariffs on Chinese goods from rising.

U.S. duties on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports are set to rise from 10 percent to 25 percent if no deal is reached by March 1 to address U.S. demands that China curb forced technology transfers and better enforce intellectual property rights.

China’s vice premier and chief trade negotiator, Liu He, and Lighthizer are to lead the next round of talks this coming week in Washington.

Tom, that's nonsense. It's never about the "deficit" itself. Who told you China can't dominate the high tech space?
No matter what action Trump takes, the media will not approve. Since he can’t win in the court lf public opinion, maybe extracting more tariffs might force China to make real and lasting changes.
The tariffs hurt Americans just as much as China. Trump wants you to believe that the US is now "winning" because "millions are now flowing into the Treasury, due to his tariffs." What he fails to mention (and probably doesn't realize, himself) is that it's NOT China paying all that money. It's American companies (importers) who then pass their extra costs down to the American consumer. The average American actually loses as a result. But Trump pats himself on the back anyway.
Wrong. Adrian you know nothing about it.
it's possible that POTUS finally realized that he is capable to close the trade deficit with China during his term and he must get off the tree that demands changes to Chinese economical and law systems. in the longer term that Chinese victory in KO.
In my opinion, there is no need to give China more time to negotiate. Because,if China really want and have a motivations and really want to solve the problems, then the deadline would be enough for China. Must be tough. Must be determined against China. Until now, the US has been a loser of customs imbalances against China and lost big money. Mr.President Trump has noticed it and injustice.
Sorry to burst your bubble and Trumps as well, but when you are the worlds number one economy you will always be a net importer of goods as the US cannot produce all we need, simple fact. The negotiations are tough when we export high tech and China exports trinkets and wares. Simple economics ans supply and demand theory.
