Investing.com-- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that while a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was possible, the two sides may need to “fight it out” before a deal can be reached.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said “sometimes they have to fight it out, but we’re going to see what happens. I think there’s a good chance there will be a deal.”
Earlier on Sunday, Trump told ABC News that it was possible that the U.S. could get involved in the conflict, although it was unclear in what capacity.
Trump also claimed in a social media post that calls and meetings over an Iran-Israel ceasefire were taking place.
Trump’s comments come as Iran and Israel traded devastating strikes over the weekend, killing scores in the latest escalation between the two countries.
Israel had first attacked Iran on Friday, and was also seen targeting Tehran’s nuclear facilities.
The conflict showed few signs of deescalating, as Tel Aviv and Tehran were wracked by strikes over the weekend.
Reports over the weekend said that Trump had vetoed an Israeli proposal to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameni.
But Trump’s rhetoric largely contrasted comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said on Saturday that Israel will ramp up its offensive against Iran.
