Trump slaps 30% tariffs on EU, Mexico
Investing.com-- Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, may visit Washington as early as next week for a third round of trade talks with the U.S., Reuters reported on Thursday, citing sources with knowledge of the plans.
The timing remains tentative, dependent on progress made in ongoing staff-level negotiations, the Reuters report said.
Japan is preparing a package of proposals aimed at winning U.S. concessions, including increased imports of American corn and soy, cooperation on shipbuilding, and revised auto inspection standards, the report stated.
Tokyo’s key demand remains exemptions from U.S. tariffs on automobiles and auto parts, Reuters reported.
Akazawa, who also serves as economic revitalization minister, said Wednesday that Japan would continue pressing for a review of various U.S. tariffs, including those on autos, steel, and aluminum.
Japan faces a potential 25% tariff on autos starting in July, part of measures announced by President Donald Trump in April.
