Ethereum Software Firm ConsenSys Collects User Data

  • ConsenSys reveals it will collect user data for every transaction.
  • Using Infura as the default RPC (NYSE:RES) provider in MetaMask will enable the company to collect information.
  • IP address and wallet address are the details that will be collected amongst other user details.

In a new privacy policy update, ConsenSys revealed that when using Infura as an RPC on MetaMask, the Ethereum software firm will collect the user’s IP address and wallet address details, upon every transaction.

The policy features a detailed list of all the user information that Infura will capture. This includes identity information, such as your first name, last name, username or similar identifier, title, date of birth, and gender, and contact information, such as users’ postal address, email address and telephone number.

Moreover, the firm will simultaneously collect profile information, including username and password, interests, preferences, feedback, and survey responses; Financial information, such as your credit card or other payment card details, bank account number, and bank routing number and financial assets holdings; alongside feedback and correspondence.

Similarly, ConsenSys would also gather Transaction information containing purchases made through the service and billing details, in addition to detailed usage details and marketing information to determine marketing communications and how users engage with them.

Providing additional clarity to the upgraded policy, ConsenSys stated that Infura and MetaMask are both products offered by the company while Infura serves as the default Remote Procedure Call (RPC) provider in MetaMask.

RPC requests data and information from programs operating on third-party computer servers. When users set Infura as the RPC provider in MetaMask, it will collect data. However, using their own Ethereum node or a third-party RPC provider with MetaMask won’t allow the company to collect any user information.
