(Reuters) - The United States shattered its daily record for coronavirus infections on Thursday, reporting more than 77,000 new cases as the number of deaths in a 24-hour period rose by nearly 1,000, according to a Reuters tally.

The loss of 969 lives was the biggest increase since June 10, with Florida, South Carolina and Texas all reporting their biggest one-day spikes on Thursday.

More than 138,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, a toll that experts warn will likely surge following recent record spikes in case numbers and an alarming rise in hospitalizations in many states.

The hardest-hit areas in Texas and Arizona are running out of places to store bodies as their morgues fill up and are bringing in coolers and refrigerated trailers.

U.S. deaths peaked in April, when the country lost on average 2,000 people a day. Fatalities have steadily fallen, averaging 1,300 a day in May and under 800 a day in June before rising again in July, according to a Reuters tally.

Americans have become increasingly divided on issues such as the reopening of schools and businesses and wearing face masks in public, hindering the fight against the virus.

The current tally of 77,217 cases surpasses the previous record set on Friday when cases rose by 69,070. In June, cases rose by an average of 28,000 a day, according to a Reuters tally. In July, they have risen by an average of 57,625 a day.

On Thursday, Texas reported over 15,000 new cases, according to a Reuters tally of county data, while Florida reported nearly 14,000 new cases and California almost 10,000.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious diseases expert, has warned that cases could soon top 100,000 a day if Americans do not come together to take steps necessary to halt the spread of the virus.

Without applying vaccine on mass scale, natural immunization is the proper way to fight the virus...more cases, more immunity is acquired. Masks might also play a role and social distancing as well. However shutting down the economy and society will destroy us all...
"Reuters' tally"...since when is Reuters a health or medical authority?
I would like to see states give out free medi masks to people. NY did and the result is great. Cloth masks offer almost zero protection in close contact.
political nonsense
fact is people are dying because of covid abd more will die if we dont take this seriouly. stop being selfish and wear masks, practice social distancing. you can save lives
nearly 1/3 of the total US cases which resulted in the initial high "death rates" was due to cuomo in NY shoving elderly people into nursing homes. once that stopped, the death rate has plummeted.
Facts
How is the weather over there in Russia, Eddie?
yet death rate at all time low. more testing, more asymptomatic cases detected. people seeing COVID-1984 for the fearmongering scam it is.
We actually had the largest spike in deaths today since may 19th. Im not saying there isnt lying going on here but the numbers are going up on both ends.
America is ranks 26th in the world with testing. it's not the number of test it's the % of the population tested. US is wayyyy behind in testing because Trump lies.
We are so screwed... 75,000 case and Trump still said we are doing great.

have you compared the per capita testing in the US versus other countries? no you are just a blind sheep looking at the "postitive cases" CNN is posting on the screen to keep you scared. meanwhile many other countries not even testing asymptomatic people and have opened or never shut down their countries in the first place. US politicians just using fear to try and keep people scared until November.
US is ranked 23rd in the world for testing per capita. All thanks to Trump's incompetence
