WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top Democrats in Congress are not close to a deal with the White House to pump more money into the U.S. economy to ease the coronavirus' heavy toll, both sides said on Saturday, after an essential lifeline for millions of unemployed Americans expired.

"This was the longest meeting we had and it was more productive than the other meetings," Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. "There are many issues that are still very much outstanding."

Schumer made the remarks after he and U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi concluded a three-hour meeting with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows at the Capitol on Saturday.

Mnuchin told reporters the talks were constructive but had reached an "impasse" over whether to come to a short-term agreement or a more comprehensive deal.

The officials will meet again on Monday, after their staff meet on Sunday, Schumer said.

Congress for the past several months has been unable to reach an accord for a next round of economic relief from a pandemic that has killed more than 150,000 Americans and triggered the sharpest economic collapse since the Great Depression.

In a meeting late Thursday between top White House officials and congressional Democratic leaders, negotiations focused on an extension of the $600 per week in federal unemployment benefits that Americans who lost jobs due to the pandemic have been receiving in addition to state jobless payments.

Pelosi said on Friday that she rejected an offer by Republican President Donald Trump's administration to continue the $600 payments for one more week.

Congressional Democrats want to see the weekly payments extended into next year as part of a broader package.

Senate Republicans have said the $600 payments are an incentive to stay home rather than return to work. Their proposal would provide a much-reduced weekly payment of $200 until states create a system to provide a 70% wage replacement for laid-off workers.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Saturday slammed Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for letting the Senate go home for the weekend without a deal to extend the unemployment benefits or protect renters facing eviction.

"Because Donald Trump is abdicating his responsibility to lead us out of the pandemic crisis and the economic crisis, we now face a potential housing crisis across the country," Biden said in a statement.

Pelosi told House Democrats in a letter late on Saturday that "all parties must understand the gravity of the situation in order to reach an agreement that protects Americans' lives, livelihoods and the life of our democracy."

I agree with everything you are saying besides “just in the nic of time” as the unemployment benefits have already expired and there will be a 2 week gap minimum before they hit peoples accounts but possibly several weeks. Will be a nightmare for many people.

this is a tough time , its really 50% 50% . if they print more money then the -people will find source of income to feed themselves and their children ( sadly we also alot of people are using it to stay at home ) , the dollar will collapse more and more until countries stop depending on the dollar as a world lead currency, then thats the edge of the cliff. im muslim , but this is also my country and yours so yes take money out of gold and stuff like that but dont be selfish and pray for US to fall so you can make a couple of hundred dollars.

Dems want people to get free money sitting at home while healthcare professionals and other front line workers are constantly working and putting their life at risk for all of us !!!Shame on Dems !!Let people follow safe guidlines and return to work rather than feeding them for chilling at home !!Only Dems are destroying the economy

The more people that return to work the more that will get infected putting even more healthcare workers at risk.  But I'll give you an A for effort.

umm, yes that is exactly what they want because people being able to stay home slows the infections and allows the US to contain the virus.that's what all the healthcare and front line workers want and have been risking their lives for.furthermore, it would be great if people could follow safe guidelines. unfortunately Republicans and in particular the white house are feeding us garbage and not promoting the safe guidelines we need.if we had a national mask mandate and proper testing we would be coming out of this pandemic with the rest of the world.

naw bro,by my reasoning if we had a mask mandate and used the DPA to get proper testing 3 months ago we would be in the same good position as the other countries that did the same.No one said never leave the house. Glad you're not sick. Almost 5 million Americans have been.I don't qualify for the $1200 check and have not been getting unemployment because I still have a job too. It's about minimizing the spread and the risk to everyone not just yourself.

Everything is heading towards drop the dollar, as it was 30 years ago, but the world has already changed and there are many competitors for the dollar. I think if the print is not stopped, there will be big inflation. Now  only two ways Zimbabwe or the market drop

This situation is very dangerous. I compare it with 2008 crisis. Than, the market fell as normal and the dollar kept its strenght. Now we have a historical economy decline and the markets are doing better than ever and the dollar is under severe pressure. I don t think anyone can afford to lose the world currency title. I think the market will crash but the question is if before or after the elections.
