Investing.com -- OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research lab, is reportedly in talks to acquire Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool, for an estimated $3 billion, according to Bloomberg, citing a source who wished to remain anonymous. This acquisition would represent the largest in OpenAI’s history, signaling a significant expansion of its capabilities in the competitive AI-driven coding assistant market.
These systems are designed to write code based on natural language prompts, enhancing productivity for developers. The terms of the acquisition have not been finalized, and the ongoing discussions could still undergo changes or not come to fruition.
During a livestream on Monday, OpenAI revealed the latest addition to its AI lineup, the GPT-4.1 series, which boasts improvements in coding, instruction following, and handling extended context. Varun Mohan, the Founder and CEO of Windsurf, participated in the event, where he shared that Windsurf had early access to the new models. Internal testing at Windsurf indicated that GPT-4.1 is 60% more efficient than the preceding GPT-4o model. Mohan also announced that Windsurf would offer GPT-4.1 free to all users for a week, followed by a significant price reduction.
In related developments, OpenAI launched new models, o3 and o4-mini, earlier today. These models are proclaimed to be the most advanced in terms of intelligence and capability for reasoning tasks. o3 and o4-mini are engineered to deliberate longer before responding, which substantially enhances their performance in complex domains such as research, coding, and visual tasks. A notable advancement is the models’ ability to autonomously utilize all ChatGPT tools, including web searches, data analysis, image interpretation, and crafting responses in various thoughtful formats. This innovation marks progress toward the creation of agentic AI systems capable of independently executing multi-step tasks.
