(Reuters) -A historic heat wave baked the U.S. Pacific Northwest where temperatures pushed into the triple digits on Saturday as local officials warned residents to take precautions while power companies asked users to conserve energy.

All of Washington and Oregon and parts of Idaho, Wyoming and California were under an excessive heat warning as temperatures were to soar 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above average throughout the region during the weekend and through next week, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

"This event will likely be one of the most extreme and prolonged heat waves in the recorded history of the Inland Northwest," the NWS said.

Across the region, dozens of daily record high temperatures are expected to be set, with monthly and even all-time records in jeopardy of falling, the service said.

In Seattle, temperatures were to reach 98 Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) on Saturday and an all-time, record-breaking 106 degrees on Monday. Officials there told the city's 725,000 residents to hydrate, keep blinds closed, use fans and to go to a city cooling centers if needed.

"It's unbearable out there. I set out to run an errand to the post office and ended up taking a Lyft (NASDAQ:LYFT) home. Even with sunscreen, shade breaks, and hydrating, I almost passed out," a Twitter user who goes by the name "Anne the Noble Land Waffle" said on the social media platform.

Officials in Multnomah County, Oregon, which encompasses the state's largest city of Portland, warned that highs well above 100 degrees could cause public transportation delays, strain emergency medical services and cause power outages.

On a short video posted online, the county's health officer Dr. Jennifer Vines urged residents to go to a cooling center if they do not have air conditioning, warning that the area is in for "life-threatening" heat.

Pacific Power, which serves 10 states, said in a statement that it did not anticipate heat-related service interruptions but asked customers to use less energy during the heat wave.

Portland General Electric (NYSE:GE) told the Oregonian that it will have about 120 crews working Saturday and Sunday to respond to any outages.

"In past weather comparable to what we’re expecting to see, our system performed as designed," PGE spokesperson John Farmer told the newspaper.

The NWS also warned of that the dry and breezy conditions could also lead to elevated fire weather concerns through early next week.

The weather service was also expected to issue new red flag warnings in California and elsewhere to advise that the brutal conditions raise the risk of wildfires.

Wildfires scorched more than 6,500 square miles (17,000 square km) of land in 2020, destroying hundreds of Californian homes during a particularly fierce fire season.

The temperature on Earth changes after secular times. There was a tropical forest where today is Antarctica, then there was the ice age and in thousand of years the whole world might become a desert.... Climate is changing again and the impact of humans on it is minimal. Also there is nothing that we can do to stop this transformation
It is much colder in my area.  What would you say snowflakes about that?
toad Gray... you really should get an education in planetary sciences before you attempt to explain global warming. the gobby gok you posted does not explain why a process that takes centuries sometimes millennia, is happening in decades and is accelerating. reminds "me if of the saying, "whistling past the graveyard". so go ahead spout your opinions based ignorance. The graveyards will soon be filled with people that continually believe the lies and misinformation of the right and their corrupt corporate sponsors.
Ooooh, and we should believe Miss Cline because she’s super smart about this and is probably always right... okay.. got it.
dogwood.. how sexist of you... you're constantly showing everyone just how ignorant you really are.
This past week the TAN etf stocks have been catching a bid. Might be a good quarterly swing trade from the summer weather news reports.
Global warming strikes US?
I wouldn't have believed it if not for : Anne The Nobel Land Waffle . Thanks for the A.T.N.L.W .heat survival skills .Take good care every one and chill I'm just kidding 👍.
Some fruits require more water to grow then others, that fact is being looked at , one small solution to redistribute and prioritize water distribution in my opinion .
So many triggered snowflakes when they hear actual science that contradicts their training from Fox News or whatever.
o. K. Comrade.
Snowflakes don’t watch Fox.. they watch cnn and msnbc.. fyi
It's called Summer
Oh wow huge alpha brain on this guy its called summer way to own the libs
 it’s effortless..
That area of the USA deserves it
what a loser
That’s right, it’s God’s way of punishing the fascists.. lol
Liberals! Every little thing that happens is magnified by an order or two of magnitude, when it's really just everyday, ordinary life. The memes who reproduce their own kind; baby memes.
Baby need his bottle? Sounds like someone is having a little tantrum
Y'all do realize that many work outdoors in States Like Florida year round with apparatuses with names like shovels, picks, jackhammer, ect... for 8 to 10 hours days in 90 degree plus heat and 90% plus humidity. Can't walk to the Post Office? I sure hope our forefathers can't see this or anyone of those who gave their lives to defend this country! WOW, just wow....
Actually the only part of Florida that's considered tropical is S. FL. while the Central and Northern parts are considered Sub tropical. In regards to the humidity, I believe I covered that in my post.
Rod ..it won't be long before most of southern Florida will be under water. enjoy
90s without humidity is tolerable if you're used it. I am but without humidity, upper 90s and above feels like a hot oven.
"But... climate change isn't real." Some people need to feel it to believe it. Sorry but not sorry.
Enjoy the heat. I'm long everything climate change.  Standing against science is not a smart move - can't change the world but I can profit from idiocy.
You can't stop the cyclical nature of global warming. Right now, the north pole is tilted 7 degrees more towards the sun then is was thousands of years ago. Over thousands of years it will wobble back, and the whole Northern ice cap will once again become vast, as it has for eons. Read up on the Milankovitch Cycles. He discovered them in the 1920's.
think ill go with nasa on this one and not some rando on the internet. https://climate.nasa.gov/blog/2949/why-milankovitch-orbital-cycles-cant-explain-earths-current-warming/
no mercy to the less educated! thank you!
