PARIS (Reuters) - France will ban from next year the killing of male chicks by crushing or gassing, a practice denounced as barbaric by animal welfare groups, and will push for a similar measure at European level, the agriculture minister said on Sunday.

Each year, 50 million male chicks are culled in this way, Julien Denormandie said in an interview posted on the website of daily Le Parisien. Only females, future egg-laying hens, are kept alive.

"France is the first country in the world, along with Germany, to end the crushing and gassing of male chicks," Denormandie added.

The two countries will try to convince their European Union partners to outlaw the practice at a council of EU agriculture ministers on Monday, he said.

From 2022, breeders in France will instead need to equip themselves with machines to detect the sex of chicks before they hatch.

"The dynamic is well underway and, given the orders already placed, the machines will be installed for two-thirds of production in France by the end of the first quarter of 2022," Denormandie added.

The measure is expected to lead to an extra cost of 1 euro cent per box of six eggs, he said.

To help breeders buy the equipment, France will grant subsidies totalling 10 million euros ($11.8 million).

The castration of live piglets will also be prohibited from the start of 2022, Denormandie said.

Social Security should cover the chicks with medical and housing benefits, so that they can live full and enjoyable lives. Anything less is unhumane.

You do know that food that could be fed to humans are being fed to animals, so that a few humans can eat animal products? If you care about starvation in Africa and other countries, you should be plant based. Best is to be vegan.

Amanda Targaryen  The average North American diet is largely plant based, as most packaged meals are completely full of vegetable by-products.  The problem is simply that there are too many people.  Not to mention there's no actual shortage of food to send out.  We can technically feed the planet as is, but storage is an issue.  Should we maintain a population of 7.5b and keep it growing? No, it's unsustainable.

Destroying soil on mass for soybeans, importing vegan food from across the globe, using third world exploitation labor, all to eat a malnourishing diet. Stop watching Netflix propaganda.

There has to be another cost-efficient alternative for them rather of crushing or gassing. Raise them to feed the hungry and homeless in any country.

You should know by now that these figures largely underestimate the true costs.  I guess I'm not surprised you're a vegan, nothing you seem to post suggests you're at all relatable to actual human beings.

Food that is fed to animals, so that a few people can eat animal products every day, could be fed to people instead. Go plant based if you care about people who starve. Go vegan if you have a heart.

They might have little commercial value to the majority of humans. But to them, their life is worth everything. They are literally being murdered the day they are born. Its disgusting. The only society that is worth the word civilized is a vegan society.

Millennial Dip Buyer  Would you say to jews that gassing their ancestors didn't hurt them? Who are you to decide what is hurting an individual or not, when you are not the victim? Would you change place with the chickens? Would you be ok with to be gassed to death just because you are a male?  And for the "you're not good or bad for eating meat". For the animals, you are bad. And they are the victims.

Amanda Targaryen  You're comparing the holocaust to chickens.  Give your head a shake.  Like actually give your head a genuine, hard shake.  One is genocide and an atrocity that shook the world and the other is chickens.  If you really think chickens are at the same level as humans, you need to rethink your priorities.  And no, the average American diet is not mostly meat based.  Most of the health problems in the US comes from added sugar being in quite literally possible thing.  Saturated fat is okay in moderation, and some meat barely has any.  Sugar is not okay.  You're also comparing raising and eating chickens to slavery, which again, you assume only had anything to do with white people.  Slavery has  been practiced by every civilization - even continues to this day.  It's not solely a white thing.  If you genuinely think that chickens need the same reproductive rights as human beings, then I don't know what to say to you.  You're comparing animals to human beings.

Amanda Targaryen  To be quite frank, the solution to the problems with food sustainability among others is simply less people.  7.5b isn't realistic or sustainable - there are far more pollutants than C02 that cause havoc on the planet and nearly all of our sustainability problems are solved with less people.  If you are worried with how an animal feels when its being slaughtered, then I don't know what to tell you, I've been involved in the slaughter of farm animals and I think you'd have to be especially sensitive to get worked up over it.  It's part of life - and I'd argue we wouldn't have evolved to where we are without meat.  If you want to be vegan, that's fine! You go right ahead.  If you are on the internet to try and change peoples minds and convince them they're awful for doing something entirely natural, then maybe you're the problem.  I don't have a problem with you being vegan - I have a problem with you trying to spread propaganda.

Millennial Dip Buyer  I am not comparing anything. I am just questioning the statement that gassing someone to death isn't something that hurts. But. There are many similarities between the Holocaust and what is happening to the animals. I am not the one who has invented this: many Holocaust survivals stated this themselves, and so does many jewish intellectuals. Its difficult to accept it, most people doesn't want to be the bad guy, but when you look at the facts, it is true.
