Vix is derivative of spx puts. Futures determine pricing so maybe caused by option decay or nearing roll date. Hope that helps

Nobody willing to pay big premiums for options. In other words, a big move in either direction is not expected by the market in the coming months.

I would go through a broker such as TD Ameritrade if you want to see real time quotes. Otherwise, Investing.com is what I use.

It's likely the S&P 500 VIX revisit the recent high of 33.35 within a few weeks not more than 8.

simon francis The VIX normally falls back down after a large spike. The high of 33 was months ago. There is no evidence to suggest it will climb back up to 33 anytime soon. There would have to be another large crash like before for that to happen. Usually the market recovers from a drop like this and the VIX falls back down to lower levels. Take a look at the chart and you will see the pattern.

Still too high but opportunistic algos are playing this for all its worth. Revenge of the shorts after year of virtually one way up for stock markets. Will take some time to settle, NK, Skripal, trade wars, tariffs, cabinet upheavals, $GBC tanking, Dollar keeps dropping, Tbill yields keep rising. Lots to digest. Extreme moves in stocks seem to have increased.

Does the VIX ever just continuously grind higher? Or does it always settle back down and reset? It seems VIX only has those major pops every so often and just cools down fairly quickly.

The major pops and cool downs was during the period of artificially low volatility. So low many people pumped huge sums of money into $XIV, which came crashing down. All that artificially supresses volatility is going to explode. This is just the start.

It’s easy to be permabull. Just long any of the major indices. Picking up pennies under the steamroller is simple until the day it flattens you. See XIV. A real trader with “vision” can spot weakness in the charts and make a educated decision to his exit long positions and open the shorts. Being able to play both sides of the market makes the best traders. Knowing when to switch from “mean reversion” trading to “trend following” will increase your returns exponentially.

Mark, on March 6 you posted about doom and gloom and mocked me for shorting vxx. After that vxx fell hard, your interpretation of charts failed you then or else you didn’t take your own advice. I can’t predict micro moves in the market and flip flop from short to long but I do recognize shorting this has worked and will continue to work.

I’ve shorted VXX TVIX UVXY off and on last year (long XIV SVXY also.) I’m no stranger to that. Trust me. My strategies are expanded instead of being pigeonholed into just that. I trade oil/ng/metals and a multitude of other things too. I’m only mocking your ego. It’s good to see that your confident. I’m confident too. Newer traders don’t need blindly follow, get burned hard shorting the VIX and ruin their lives. That would be their own fault, but I’m only helping them to see that’s not the only way to trade and there are dangers. It’s not a big deal, I’m just razzing you a little. :)

No worries mark. I am locked in a short volatility trade because I can not match the returns this has awarded me. I also admittedly can’t trade equities or commodities successfully, so I camp here. Some days it isn’t any fun to look at my account haha, but it always plays out in the end. Anyways I’m sure you had a huge day yesterday if you were short equities and long vix, congratulations. I also deserved to be razzed some, I troll the vix bulls enough that I have it coming. Anyways good luck and happy trading!!

Vix bulls and crash callers surface on days like today to toot their horn and pat themselves on the back. These are not days you hide if you’re shorting the vix, you add!! Great opportunity to add or start a short, leave time for it to work and don’t shoot your whole wad on one trade and you should never lose money!!

Remember kids, don’t be a permabull. Don’t be a permabear. Real traders are saavy enough to play both sides of the market to achieve absolute returns. Know when to go long by follow momentum and scale out when it slows down. Know your trendlines and patterns.
