Just buy and hold for a slow grind to 2400. Don't expect big moves up. Only 5 to 10 points up on avg going forward. Volitility is dead.

When small-caps get boring, aka low volatility, it's time to buy long straddles and get the popcorn out.

Since early 2020 the M2 supply has seen it's largest increase since WW2. Maybe we should compare the present stock market and economy to the period of the early 1940s. During the War period there was a sharp rise in M2 as the federal government increased defense spending. Throughout the early 1940s there was also supply shortages, rationing, and a tight domestic labor market. The stock market did very well during this period. After a 27% correction that bookended the Pearl Harbor attack and entry of the US into direct combat the Dow experienced a 120% bull run from April 1942 until May 1946. Once crossed, the Dow managed to stay above it's 50-week moving average for almost the entirety of this period. Our current market is is largely following this pattern. The SPX is up 107% off the March 2020 lows. The bull run of the early and mid 1940s came to end after WW2 ended. I would assume government spending fell. The Dow had a 24% bear market from '47-'49.

Some numbers on inflation. In the 1940s inflation was volatile. Prior to 1941 when WW2 hostilities intensified, inflation was running at annualized rate of 1.44% in 1940. But in 1941 inflation surged to a staggering 11.34%. In 1942 inflation was still running hot at 7.64%. Inflation then subsided in 1943 and remained below 3% through 1945. I attribute this to the rapid increase in deficit spending at the outset of the America's entry into WW2. The buildup in military equipment, the drain on basic material supplies, and the reduction in men in the domestic labor force caused abrupt imbalances in the economy. Once these imbalances stabilized inflation declined sharply in 1943. There was another inflationary jolt during the demobilization period 1946-1947 when 8 million service men returned to the USA. By 1948 inflation once again subsided and there was largely benign deflation by 1949. To put all of this into context for our post-covid shock environment.

I should elaborate here on the 1946-47 period. I'm still doing research on this topic so I don't have all of the facts pinned down. When the War effort finally ended in 1945 after Japan's surrender the demobilization of the military presence in Europe and Japan got under way. The defense department authorized the use of battle ships to transport troops back to the USA. The demobilization process was reportedly very rapid. By the end of 1946 some 8 million troops had returned home. This probably contributed to the rapid rise in domestic inflation. You had a sudden increase in domestic spending with all of these men returning home. Maybe the government gave them starter money to help them pay for essentials and other needs until they could reintegrate into the workforce. What happened in 1946-1947 seems very similar to 2021. The post vaccine reopening of the economy combined with stimulus checks is akin to that demobilization period in 1946.

I have this feeling that the Fed was helping someone to get out of stocks today? We saw this dump yesterday around the sane time and today too. JPow came out at the same time to give cover fire maybe? Markets were never bothered by taper. Why would the markets react to taper talk today as if something is new?
