LONDON (Reuters) - Equity funds have attracted more than half a trillion dollars in the past five months, exceeding inflows recorded over the previous 12 years, according to data from BofA, which has likened the stampede to a “melt-up” in markets.

People may need to get vaccinated against Covid-19 annually, just like seasonal flu shots, over the next several years, Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky told CNBC on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, as [the virus] spreads it can also mutate,” he told CNBC’s Meg Tirrell during a Healthy Returns Spotlight event.

CNN: Biden adviser says variants could turn the pandemic into a situation "UNLINE ANYTHING WE'VE SEEN YET" “I worry desperately in the next six to 12 weeks we’re going to see a situation with this pandemic unlike anything we’ve seen yet to date,” Osterholm said. “And that is really a challenge that I don’t think most people realize yet.”  NEW LOCKDOWNS!!! “The difference is going to be, are we going to react now or later,” Osterholm said. Like other places, he said that the US will take “dramatic steps” to deal with the variants

CNN: "These variants carry a constellation of genetic mutations," the CDC team wrote. The worries are that the VIRUS COULD CHANGE IN WAYS THAT WOULD HELP IT EVADE THE IMMUNITY INDUCED BY VACCINATION, or the the immunity introduced with antibody-based treatments. The new coronavirus vaccines are designed to be quick and easy to change to match new circulating strains, but a major change would mean PEOPLE WOULD NEED TO BE RE-VACCINATED. It's also possible some of the changes could make the virus harder to detect in standard tests. And the CDC is also worried that if the virus changes in just the right way, it could re-infect people who have recovered from coronavirus already. Influenza already does this.

Now it's official-THE WHOLE UK IS SHUT DUE TO FEARS VACCINES WILL NOT WORK WITH NEW VARIANTS!!! The UK will be closed to all new arrivals from Monday for anyone without proof of a negative coronavirus test, in a major escalation of restrictions against a potentially dangerous new variant of “unknown qualities” from Brazil. Scientists at the government’s top secret defence laboratory at Porton Down are working on samples of the mutation to see if it is not only more transmissible but, crucially, if it makes vaccines currently in use in the UK less effective. ****Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser, said at the Downing Street press conference that there were two mutations from Brazil that had been identified, but one was “particularly important” because it contained two changes to the genetic sequence of the virus, at positions 484 and 501.****

The Brazilian Covid strain is a "real cause for concern", leading epidemiologist Professor Neil Ferguson has told LBC, after a travel ban from the country and 15 others was put in place. Prof Ferguson told Matt Frei that the new strain could affect the efficacy of vaccines and may also affect the ability of people who have already had the virus to fight it off. https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/brazilian-covid-strain-cause-concern-professor-neil-ferguson/

He also mentions the surge in interest in electric-vehicle makers like Tesla Inc. TSLA, +7.94% as evidence of the market’s speculative fervor. “The most impressive features are the intensity and enthusiasm of bulls, the breadth of coverage of stocks and the market, and, above all, the rising hostility toward bears,” he writes.  https://www.marketwatch.com/story/famed-investor-doubling-down-says-stock-market-a-real-humdinger-of-a-bubble-11609882369?siteid=yhoof2

The Covid variant circulating in South Africa could be resistant to vaccines, a leading expert has suggested, but reckons it could take just six weeks to develop a new jab if needed. John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford, said his “gut feeling” was that the vaccines already on stream would be effective against the new UK strain first identified recently. But he said: “I don’t know about the South African strain, I think that’s a big question mark." https://www.independent.ie/world-news/coronavirus/coronavirus-variant-from-south-africa-could-be-resistant-to-any-vaccine-39927782.html
