Winner take it all economy. Amazon, Microsoft, Tesla are the best examples of Winner Take It all companies. These companies are vertically integrated in such a ways that op-ex cost for a final product is much less to their competitors.Their technology stack is advanced. Especially in case of Tesla, they make their own battery pack, motor drivetrain, MCU chip (motor control unit), software and on the top of that no marketing expense. They definitely are worth to have higher PE than their counterparts who spend money left and right on marketing and external suppliers for various components.
What I find particularly ironical about people complaining that Tesla's regulatory credits are cheating, is that they are completely (willingly, imho) oblivious to the fact that all gas-powered cars need cheap gas to sell. And what is subsidized by the billions every year? Oil. Subsidies for motor oil in 2019 were in the $15B range in the US. Where are the complaints that legacy automakers are indirectly benefitting from these?
Thank you for giving an insight. I think all such dots are scattered so consumer is not aware about how subsidies have been provided in which form to which industry. It is the wise customer which will look into these details. Media also seem not covering these topics, as they need advertisement money....etc. So in nutshell, people will have to find the truth and get enlightened to make appropriate decision.
you are very right on the media coverage depending on ad money. And since Tesla doesn't run ads, they don't get a favor treatment. And unfortunately that unfavored treatment goes right into the hears of gullible people.
