As long as you keep using the monthly distributions to reinvest at nav(about 20-30% below market price) and keep accumulating those discounted dripped shares over time, the market can go below your buy price and your investment can still grow in value. By the time youve doubled your shares strictly through dripping at nav, youve reduced your breakeven by 50%. If you cant stomach the massive downward fluctuations during the rights offering announcement and RO...best to sell before RO and buy back after. If you use it as an income producing investment, the dripped shares increase the dividend 7-10%+. I have one account for income and another to just keep accumulating those discounted drip shares. If the market doesnt move, the position will still be in profits. Because youre investing about a 2% monthly dividend back into the fund at a price thats 20-30% lower than the market price, after 6 months 12%of your investment has been cost averaged down significantly. All those dripped shares give you a cushion to ride out market fluctuations against you. If you sell the dripped shares for income then your principal has to ride out the crazy fluctuations.
