In regular free market majority of currency exchange operation is speculation, this brings liquidity. On RUB there is no speculation, it's forbiden, the same as money frozeen on stocks in Moscow (can you sell your stock and exchange rubel to dolars or not?) You have mention, you can buy dolars as a prove its free market :D how many dolars have you bought? US wouldn't have the opportunity as it would be nuclear before we even have an opportunity to stage an attack. Russia has 2x as many Nukes, capable and delivery via vast Submarine fleet, be able to decimate air, Naval bases before an offensive even begins. While US has better trained troops, Russia will be defending it's homeland while US would be the invading army and we all know how those stories end. India, Pakistan, China, Iran etc, would all be supportive of Russia giving the proximity of foreign aggression to their borders and past experiences with Western powers.

European companies have already opened their ruble account and have been buying tons of gas, oil, crops, metals, nitrogen fertilizer, etc. with ruble. Ruble demand is the highest in decades.
Not a real currency because not a real market. With a piece of paper and some scissors you can make your own currency at home and decide that 1PAP = $1M. It has about as much value as the current RUB rate...

Bloomberg Media was in absolute shambles reporting on the russian rouble this morning. You could see how painful it was for them to admit that western sanctions are bsckfiring.
The ruble is strengthening because Russia cannot spend dollars. Sanctions hit imports to Russia. While the ruble is growing, this means that goods are not being delivered and prices are rising. In essence, Russia ships oil/gas for money that costs nothing for the country.
