CFTC Futures data shows speculators reduced bearish bets

10-Year Treasuries Non-Commercial Positions:

Large US 10 Year T-Note Futures traders and speculators cut back on their overall bearish positions last week for a second straight week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of -85,838 contracts in the data reported for May 19th. This was a weekly change of +46,606 net contracts from the previous week’s total of -132,444 net contracts that was recorded on May 12th.

For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures jumped by +44,377 contracts while the short positions edged lower by -2,229 contracts to register the overall net change of +50,672 contracts for the week.

Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday May 12th to Tuesday May 19th, the yield on the 10-Year treasury note edged lower from 2.28 percent to 2.27 percent, according to data from the United States Treasury Department.

Commercial Positions:

In the commercial positions for the 10-year note on the week, the commercials (hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes) cut their overall net bullish positions for a second week to a total net position of +237,296 contracts through May 19th. This is a weekly change of -53,610 contracts from the total net position of +290,906 contracts on May 12th.
