Investing.com – United States stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.36%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which rose 3.58% or 3.90 points to trade at 112.93 at the close. Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) added 2.72% or 2.48 points to end at 93.64 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 1.91% or 0.48 points to 25.62 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which fell 2.31% or 2.24 points to trade at 94.84 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.76% or 0.65 points to end at 36.37 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 1.18% or 1.26 points to 105.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nabors Industries Ltd (NYSE:NBR) which rose 14.72% to 13.64, Denbury Resources Inc (NYSE:DNR) which was up 13.66% to settle at 8.32 and CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which gained 11.22% to close at 67.32.
The worst performers were Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which was down 6.41% to 29.19 in late trade, Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which lost 6.39% to settle at 54.63 and Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which was down 3.83% to 68.56 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China HGS Real Estate Inc (NASDAQ:HGSH) which rose 45.78% to 5.700, Fate Therap (NASDAQ:FATE) which was up 42.43% to settle at 5.27 and Imris Inc (NASDAQ:IMRS) which gained 29.62% to close at 0.272.
The worst performers were ImmunoGen Inc (NASDAQ:IMGN) which was down 43.69% to 6.11 in late trade, Metabolix Inc (NASDAQ:MBLX) which lost 35.42% to settle at 0.31 and The Finish Line Inc (NASDAQ:FINL) which was down 19.20% to 23.35 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1756 to 1045 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1426 rose and 1371 declined, while 7 ended unchanged.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.89% to 16.66.
Gold for February delivery was down 0.03% or 0.30 to $1194.50 a troy ounce.
Elsewhere in commodities trading, crude oil for delivery in February rose 6.68% or 3.63 to hit $57.99 a barrel, while the February brent oil contract rose 5.05% or 3.00 to trade at $62.27 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.44% to 1.2232, while USD/JPY rose 0.54% to 119.48.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.41% at 89.82.
