U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.27%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Technology and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.19%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.69% or 0.79 points to trade at 47.60 at the close. Meanwhile, Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 0.78% or 0.90 points to end at 115.73 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.63% or 0.26 points to 41.80 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which fell 3.28% or 3.89 points to trade at 114.55 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) declined 1.32% or 0.73 points to end at 54.56 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was down 1.28% or 1.00 points to 77.06.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Baxalta Inc (NYSE:BXLT) which rose 14.42% to 37.93, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was up 7.49% to settle at 121.00 and Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which gained 6.77% to close at 95.73.

The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 13.86% to 107.00 in late trade, Allstate Corporation (NYSE:ALL) which lost 10.23% to settle at 62.28 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 10.15% to 20.01 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lendingtree Inc (NASDAQ:TREE) which rose 40.98% to 116.44, Ipc Healthcare Ord (NASDAQ:IPCM) which was up 35.56% to settle at 79.25 and Codexis Inc (NASDAQ:CDXS) which gained 28.97% to close at 4.140.

The worst performers were Net Element International, Inc. (NASDAQ:NETE) which was down 43.10% to 0.28 in late trade, LB Foster Company (NASDAQ:FSTR) which lost 26.07% to settle at 20.70 and ID Systems Inc (NASDAQ:IDSY) which was down 25.88% to 3.98 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1741 to 1328; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1385 fell and 1366 advanced, while 10 ended unchanged.

Shares in Baxalta Inc (NYSE:BXLT) rose to all time highs; gaining 14.42% or 4.78 to 37.93. Shares in Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 7.49% or 8.44 to 121.00. Shares in Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) rose to 5-year highs; rising 6.77% or 6.07 to 95.73. Shares in NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) fell to 52-week lows; falling 10.15% or 2.26 to 20.01. Shares in Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) rose to all time highs; gaining 0.78% or 0.90 to 115.73. Shares in EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) fell to 52-week lows; down 1.32% or 0.73 to 54.56. Shares in Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) fell to 3-years lows; losing 1.28% or 1.00 to 77.06. Shares in Lendingtree Inc (NASDAQ:TREE) rose to all time highs; gaining 40.98% or 33.84 to 116.44. Shares in Ipc Healthcare Ord (NASDAQ:IPCM) rose to all time highs; rising 35.56% or 20.79 to 79.25. Shares in LB Foster Company (NASDAQ:FSTR) fell to 3-years lows; falling 26.07% or 7.30 to 20.70. Shares in ID Systems Inc (NASDAQ:IDSY) fell to 52-week lows; losing 25.88% or 1.39 to 3.98.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.50% to 13.00.

Gold for December delivery was down 0.02% or 0.20 to $1087.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.19% or 0.09 to hit $45.95 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.11% or 0.06 to trade at $50.24 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.60% to 1.0886, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 124.33.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.01% at 98.05.
