Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Mining and IT sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.42%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TO:FFH), which rose 2.22% or 14.41 points to trade at 663.41 at the close. Meanwhile, Riocan REIT (TO:REI_u) added 1.62% or 0.45 points to end at 28.27 and Canadian Apartment Properties REIT (TO:CAR_u) was up 1.30% or 0.40 points to 31.23 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Transcontinental Inc (TO:TCLa), which fell 9.86% or 1.89 points to trade at 17.28 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) declined 9.61% or 0.82 points to end at 7.71 and Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) was down 9.24% or 0.330 points to 3.240.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 850 to 329 and 125 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 15.90% to 16.11.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.41% or 5.25 to $1277.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 3.18% or 1.61 to hit $48.95 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 2.93% or 1.52 to trade at $50.43 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.31% to 0.7837, while CAD/EUR rose 0.26% to 0.6963.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.53% at 94.60.
