Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Staples, IT and Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.81%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lundin Mining Corporation (TO:LUN), which rose 10.50% or 0.57 points to trade at 6.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE) added 9.68% or 0.36 points to end at 4.08 and Tahoe Resources Inc (TO:THO) was up 4.99% or 0.81 points to 17.05 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Goldcorp Inc. (TO:G), which fell 6.20% or 1.50 points to trade at 22.71 at the close. Silver Standard Resources Inc. (TO:SSO) declined 5.48% or 0.38 points to end at 6.56 and Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc (TO:ATDb) was down 5.12% or 2.49 points to 46.18.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 799 to 647 and 198 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.07% to 13.99.
Gold for June delivery was down 2.24% or 27.10 to $1182.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.89% or 1.10 to hit $59.69 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.37% or 0.90 to trade at $66.74 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.35% to 0.8291, while CAD/EUR fell 1.24% to 0.7389.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.45% at 94.88.
