Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.72%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb), which rose 22.69% or 0.27 points to trade at 1.46 at the close. Meanwhile, Major Drilling Group International (TO:MDI) added 6.67% or 0.26 points to end at 4.16 and Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb) was up 5.90% or 0.51 points to 9.15 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Paramount Resources Ltd . (TO:POU), which fell 9.51% or 1.21 points to trade at 11.51 at the close. Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) declined 8.86% or 0.07 points to end at 0.72 and MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) was down 8.03% or 0.76 points to 8.71.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 810 to 544 and 147 ended unchanged.
Shares in Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) fell to 5-year lows; losing 8.86% or 0.07 to 0.72. Shares in MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) fell to all time lows; down 8.03% or 0.76 to 8.71.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.76% to 26.22.
Gold for December delivery was down 1.28% or 14.40 to $1106.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 3.50% or 1.61 to hit $44.33 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 3.67% or 1.81 to trade at $47.70 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.26% to 0.7550, while CAD/EUR fell 0.28% to 0.6739.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.12% at 95.95.
