Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Mining and Consumer Staples sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.49%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which rose 23.81% or 0.35 points to trade at 1.82 at the close. Meanwhile, Amaya Inc (TO:AYA) added 17.14% or 4.17 points to end at 28.50 and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) was up 11.67% or 0.07 points to 0.67 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb), which fell 8.98% or 0.15 points to trade at 1.52 at the close. Performance Sports Group Ltd (TO:PSG) declined 7.16% or 1.28 points to end at 16.60 and Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO) was down 6.67% or 0.58 points to 8.12.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 731 to 546 and 182 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.45% to 23.81.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.18% or 2.00 to $1113.20 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.16% or 0.07 to hit $45.02 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.86% or 0.41 to trade at $47.95 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.40% to 0.7543, while CAD/EUR rose 0.31% to 0.6745.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.08% at 96.34.
