Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Utilities and Consumer Staples sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.11%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Sun Life Financial Inc. (TO:SLF), which rose 9.82% or 4.55 points to trade at 50.90 at the close. Meanwhile, Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) added 9.50% or 0.170 points to end at 1.960 and Manulife Financial Corporation (TO:MFC) was up 9.21% or 1.85 points to 21.94 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Silver Wheaton Corp. (TO:SLW), which fell 16.22% or 5.23 points to trade at 27.01 at the close. Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG) declined 11.38% or 2.620 points to end at 20.410 and IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) was down 10.36% or 0.600 points to 5.190.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 648 to 564 and 103 ended unchanged.
Shares in Sun Life Financial Inc. (TO:SLF) rose to 5-year highs; up 9.82% or 4.55 to 50.90.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.16% to 14.68.
Gold for December delivery was down 1.16% or 14.75 to $1258.75 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.08% or 0.94 to hit $44.33 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.64% or 0.76 to trade at $45.60 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.40% to 0.7420, while CAD/EUR fell 0.21% to 0.6813.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 98.81.
