Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 2.88%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Trican Well Service Ltd . (TO:TCW), which rose 26.72% or 0.31 points to trade at 1.47 at the close. Meanwhile, Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb) added 22.96% or 1.69 points to end at 9.05 and Canadian Oil Sands Limited (TO:COS) was up 16.50% or 1.01 points to 7.13 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Performance Sports Group Ltd (TO:PSG), which fell 5.94% or 1.07 points to trade at 16.95 at the close. Quebecor Inc (TO:QBRb) declined 2.64% or 0.74 points to end at 27.27 and Aimia Inc (TO:AIM) was down 1.43% or 0.16 points to 11.03.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 1019 to 343 and 154 ended unchanged.
Shares in Performance Sports Group Ltd (TO:PSG) fell to 52-week lows; down 5.94% or 1.07 to 16.95. Shares in Aimia Inc (TO:AIM) fell to 3-years lows; down 1.43% or 0.16 to 11.03.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.46% to 24.45.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.01% or 0.10 to $1124.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 10.80% or 4.17 to hit $42.77 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 10.41% or 4.49 to trade at $47.63 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.62% to 0.7569, while CAD/EUR rose 1.28% to 0.6731.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.48% at 95.76.
