Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Financials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.19%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE), which rose 15.40% or 0.75 points to trade at 5.62 at the close. Meanwhile, MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) added 13.27% or 0.65 points to end at 5.55 and Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD) was up 10.88% or 0.52 points to 5.30 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc (TO:ZZZ), which fell 4.77% or 1.59 points to trade at 31.76 at the close. DHX Media Ltd B (TO:DHXb) declined 3.31% or 0.24 points to end at 7.00 and New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD) was down 2.51% or 0.150 points to 5.830.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 801 to 367 and 126 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.88% to 14.17.
Gold for December delivery was down 0.34% or 4.50 to $1325.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 5.10% or 2.28 to hit $46.95 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 5.61% or 2.61 to trade at $49.13 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.82% to 0.7640, while CAD/EUR rose 0.86% to 0.6813.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.01% at 95.34.
