Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.07% to hit a new 3-months high.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which rose 15.73% or 1.20 points to trade at 8.83 at the close. Meanwhile, First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) added 14.68% or 1.60 points to end at 12.50 and HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) was up 14.56% or 0.68 points to 5.35 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Interfor Corp (TO:IFP), which fell 3.24% or 0.42 points to trade at 12.53 at the close. Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW) declined 2.88% or 0.26 points to end at 8.78 and Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TO:FFH) was down 2.79% or 20.02 points to 696.73.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 893 to 477 and 357 ended unchanged.
Shares in First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 14.68% or 1.60 to 12.50.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.89% to 13.76 a new 6-months low.
Gold for June delivery was up 1.41% or 17.40 to $1252.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 3.13% or 1.29 to hit $42.48 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 2.56% or 1.10 to trade at $44.01 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 1.00% to 0.7900, while CAD/EUR rose 0.61% to 0.6955.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.41% at 94.06.
