Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Energy and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.46%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bankers Petroleum Ltd . (TO:BNK), which rose 10.57% or 0.280 points to trade at 2.930 at the close. Meanwhile, Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) added 8.38% or 0.16 points to end at 2.07 and Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp . (TO:PRE) was up 7.77% or 0.24 points to 3.33 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Primero Mining Corp (TO:P), which fell 7.52% or 0.360 points to trade at 4.430 at the close. Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) declined 3.93% or 1.34 points to end at 32.72 and Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO) was down 3.59% or 0.29 points to 7.78.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 750 to 649 and 201 ended unchanged.
Shares in Home Capital Group Inc. (TO:HCG) fell to 52-week lows; losing 3.93% or 1.34 to 32.72.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 8.21% to 9.09.
Gold for August delivery was down 0.10% or 1.10 to $1154.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.26% or 0.66 to hit $52.86 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.65% or 0.38 to trade at $58.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7850, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.00% to 0.7132.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.12% at 96.81.
