Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT, Financials and Industrials sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.14%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which rose 4.23% or 0.080 points to trade at 1.970 at the close. Meanwhile, MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) added 3.39% or 0.30 points to end at 9.15 and ECN Capital Corp (TO:ECN) was up 3.25% or 0.10 points to 3.18 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Empire Company Ltd (TO:EMPa), which fell 17.01% or 3.18 points to trade at 15.52 at the close. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) declined 10.43% or 1.14 points to end at 9.79 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG) was down 10.37% or 2.140 points to 18.490.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 728 to 509 and 101 ended unchanged.
Shares in Empire Company Ltd (TO:EMPa) fell to 5-year lows; losing 17.01% or 3.18 to 15.52. Shares in MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) rose to 52-week highs; rising 3.39% or 0.30 to 9.15.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 88.92% to 12.28.
Gold for February delivery was down 2.91% or 33.90 to $1129.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $51.05 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.52% or 0.28 to trade at $54.18 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.39% to 0.7494, while CAD/EUR rose 0.71% to 0.7198.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.13% at 103.18.
