Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.12%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Veresen Inc . (TO:VSN), which rose 10.84% or 1.19 points to trade at 12.17 at the close. Meanwhile, Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW) added 10.02% or 0.97 points to end at 10.65 and Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TO:VII) was up 9.70% or 2.65 points to 29.98 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Stantec Inc. (TO:STN), which fell 6.75% or 2.20 points to trade at 30.39 at the close. Great-West Lifeco Inc . (TO:GWO) declined 5.89% or 1.99 points to end at 31.77 and Manulife Financial Corporation (TO:MFC) was down 5.41% or 0.97 points to 16.95.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 685 to 450 and 148 ended unchanged.
Shares in Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TO:VII) rose to all time highs; rising 9.70% or 2.65 to 29.98.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.35% to 14.15.
Gold for December delivery was up 0.16% or 2.20 to $1366.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.30% or 0.94 to hit $41.77 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.46% or 1.06 to trade at $44.16 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.26% to 0.7673, while CAD/EUR rose 0.47% to 0.6896.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.25% at 95.73.
