OL Jonathan Martin, known best for his role in a bullying incident in 2013, was waived on Thursday

Investing.com -- The San Francisco 49ers announced on Thursday that the team waived offensive lineman Jonathan Martin.

Martin, a 2012 second-round pick out of Stanford, garnered significant headlines two seasons ago when he claimed he was the victim of constant bullying from fellow Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito. The Dolphins responded by trading Martin to the 49ers last March for a conditional draft pick.

Martin appeared in 15 games for the 49ers last season, including nine starts. Martin, 25, was scheduled to make $1.042 million in 2015-2016. The move creates nearly $500,000 of cap space for San Francisco, which is roughly $7.8 million under the salary cap, according to NFL Players Association figures.

The move is the latest in a major overhaul of the 49ers ' roster in the offseason. Former coach Jim Harbaugh parted ways with the team to coach the University of Michigan, running back Frank Gore signed with the Colts and linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland both retired. The status of defensive lineman Justin Smith and wide receiver Michael Crabtree with the team for next season is still uncertain.

Since Martin appeared on the 49ers' opening week 53-man roster, the team will surrender a 2015 seventh-round pick to the Dolphins in the trade.

At Stanford, Martin started in 37 of 39 career games and was a two-time All-American.
