Investing.com - The dollar remained broadly higher against a basket of other major currencies on Wednesday, as the previous session's upbeat U.S. data fuelled optimism over the strength of the economy and as markets eyed the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy statement.

The greenback strengthened after the U.S. Commerce Department said on Tuesday that the number of building permits issued last month increased by 10.1% last month to 1.143 million units from March's total of 1.038 million.

The report also showed that U.S. housing starts soared by 20.2% in April to hit 1.135 million units from March's total of 944,000 units, easily surpassing expectations for an increase of 9.9%.

Investors were eyeing the minutes of the Fed's April meeting, due later in the day, for fresh indications on the timing of an initial rate hike.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a trade-weighted basket of six major currencies, was up 0.27% to 95.62, the highest level since May 5.

EUR/USD dropped 0.43% to two-week lows of 1.1102.

The single currency weakened as Athens was still scrambling to reach an agreement with its international lenders over economic reforms they say must be implemented before the final €7.2 billion tranche of the country's €240 billion bailout is released.

Greece is due to make a €305 million payment to the International Monetary Fund on June 5, but will default if a deal is not reached by then.

The euro was also hit after senior European Central Bank policymaker Benoit Coeure said on Tuesday that the central bank is planning to speed up the pace of its bond-buying stimulus program before the summer in order to avoid the "notably lower market liquidity" in late July and August.

The pound was higher, with GBP/USD up 0.22% to 1.5548, off one-week lows of 1.5473 hit earlier in the session.

Sterling was boosted after the minutes of the Bank of England's May meeting showed that the Monetary Policy Committee was unanimous in voting to keep rates on hold and its quantitative-easing program unchanged.

The minutes reiterated the banks view that record low inflation rates are not likely to continue for long and that consumer prices will pick up notably towards the end of the year.

Elsewhere, the dollar was higher against the yen and the Swiss franc, with USD/JPY up 0.34% to 121.10 and with USD/CHF edging up 0.11% to 0.9380.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars were weaker, with AUD/USD down 0.51% to 0.7874 and NZD/USD declining 0.60% to 0.7299.

The Westpac Banking Corporation earlier reported that Australia's consumer sentiment rose 6.4% this month, after a 3.2% decline in April.

Meanwhile, USD/CAD held steady at one-month highs of 1.2239 after official data showed that Canada's wholesale sales rose 0.8% in March, disappointing expectations for an increase of 0.9%, after a 0.4% fall the previous month.
