Hi guys, I am still somewhat of a newbie in forex trading and basically I don't have much experience with this pair…. :) I have analysed the previous charts (past months) to learn how the BOJ statement has affected the movement of this pair. I noticed that more often than not the JPY strengthens and USDJPY falls quite severely during each monetary policy statement. The only time a significant upward spike occurred was in January when they lowed the interest rates into negative territory. Even then, in a couple of days the price returned to the starting point (pre-announcement).

In essence, is it correct to say that the market has already factored in a significant easing of monetary policy at this point and unless the BOJ comes up with something big, we won't see a spike. In other words, if they fail to deliver something substantial, USDJPY will fall like how it usually does…?? :)

I am not asking for forecasts or predictions of what's to come tomorrow… Just want to know if I got the main concept correct so that I will know how to react accordingly after the news is released tomorrow… :)

it would take pages and pages to explain in details why on this pair a disapointment about the BoJ implies a rise in the yen (it could be the opposite for another currency when the central bank of this currency disapoint), but the explanation of why yen surged just after falling after the announcment of the negative interest rate was because specifically with this negative interest rate it became interesting to use the yen suenly as a funding currency which implies a lot of yen buying which produced the opposite effect expected by the BoJ at this time. the more an interest rate is negative, the more this currency is excellent as a funding currency, the more people are buying this currency ... until this currency become so expensive that the advantages of buying it as funding currency cancel with the profit expected of using it as a funding currency, then it will reverse
