CFTC Futures data shows speculators sharply raised bearish bets

10 Year Treasury Note Non-Commercial Positions:

Large 10-year treasury note futures traders and speculators turned overall bearish last week on 10-year notes for the first time since February as traders reduced bullish positions and increased bearish positions, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

The non-commercial futures contracts of the 10-year treasury notes, primarily traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of -16,863 contracts in the data reported for March 29th. This was a weekly change of -66,968 net contracts from the previous week’s total of +50,105 net contracts that was recorded on March 22nd.

For the week, the overall standing long positions in 10-year futures fell by -37,287 contracts and combined with a rise in the short positions by 29,681 contracts to register the overall net change of -66,968 contracts for the week.

The large speculator positions have fallen for three straight weeks and are now in an overall bearish position for the first time since February 16th when positions equaled -40,277 contracts.

10 Year US Treasury Note Commercial Positions:

In the commercial positions for the 10-year note on the week, the commercials (hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes) added to their overall bullish positions to a total net position of +71,862 contracts through March 29th. This is a weekly change of +58,664 contracts from the total net position of +13,198 contracts on March 22nd.

IEF 7-10 Year Bond ETF:

Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday March 22nd to Tuesday March 29th, the 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF gained from 108.80 to 110.09, according to ETF data for the iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF (NYSE:IEF).
